New dropfront shelves in recycled steel from SSAB
We are now taking the next step in our sustainability efforts with new dropfront shelves manufactured in SSAB Zero, recycled steel with near zero CO₂ emissions.
– This high-quality material has identical mechanical properties to traditional steel, but with significantly lower environmental impact, says Fredrik Lundvall, Head of Product Development at System Edström.
A long-term commitment to sustainability
Since 2017, we at System Edström have worked purposefully to offer a more sustainable product range. As the market leader in van racking solutions in Sweden and the Nordic region, we see it as a given to contribute to a more sustainable industry through conscious choices.
– The work to reduce our climate footprint began long before my time at System Edström. We simply continue to build on the conviction that we must do what’s best for the environment – it’s in our DNA. It is obvious that we must challenge ourselves today so that our tomorrow can be greener, says Fredrik Lundvall.
SSAB Zero – sustainable steel without compromise
For us, steel is the primary material of choice. Most of the steel used in our products is manufactured in Sweden from Swedish steel supplied by SSAB. This means shorter transport distances and reduced climate impact.
The next step is to use SSAB Zero, a recycled steel launched in 2023. It is produced from recycled scrap using fossil-free energy, resulting in virtually zero fossil CO₂ emissions – without compromising on performance or quality. The fossil carbon emissions in SSAB’s production of SSAB Zero™ are less than 0.05 kg CO2e/kg steel in Scope 1 and 2 of the GHG Protocol.

Climate benefits on multiple levels
The first product we are manufacturing with this new material is our dropfront shelves. By combining recycled steel with a new construction design, we achieve both lower weight and reduced climate impact.
- 35 percent lower weight on the new shelves.
- Approximately 21 tonnes of steel saved annually, corresponding to around 60 tonnes of CO₂ during production.
- During vehicle use, the lower weight results in an additional 17 tonnes of CO₂ savings per year (calculated based on a vehicle driving 15,500 km).

The beginning of an even greener future
We see the launch of our dropfront shelves in SSAB Zero as an important step toward a fossil-free future, without compromising on quality or functionality.
– It’s exciting that we are an early adopter of SSAB Zero steel. We actually started this work shortly after SSAB’s launch, but it is only now that the products are finally reaching the end customer. For future green projects, this positions us well with SSAB and other suppliers, as they know we are at the forefront with new solutions, says Fredrik Lundvall.
